Amalfi Coast Chats

Welcome to the first monthly Amalfi Coast chat on Substack. (Gah … it’s my face! But I wanted to say a proper hello.) One of the things I’m most excited about here on Substack is the chance to build a community where we can all connect more about this place we love: the Amalfi Coast. So come on over to Substack and leave a comment to join the conversation – or just hit reply and let me know what you’re up to this summer.

Summer Festivals & Things to Do

In last week’s newsletter, I shared a bit about the historic Regata delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare and the Festival of Sant’ Andrea in Amalfi. Summer is a busy time here and I’ve been enjoying the return of festivals and concerts this summer on the Amalfi Coast. Planning a trip? Check out this great list of festivals on the Amalfi Coast from Authentic Amalfi Coast.

One of the most impressive events you’ll read about there is the Luminaria di San Domenico that takes place in Praiano from July 30th to August 4th this summer. Thousands of candles are lit, there’s impressive fire dancing and the experience is absolutely captivating.

For an even better look, Nicki in Positano (you’re all following her Positano Diaries series on YouTube, right?) made a great video last year where you can experience the Luminaria up close. (Plus see how tomato passata is made – another summer classic of a tastier variety!)

Kenny Garrett performing in Amalfi’s Piazza Duomo, July 15, 2022.

If you’re going to be in or around Amalfi this summer, check out the schedule for the Amalfi Summer Fest. It’s a series of concerts set in Amalfi’s main square, which is such a pretty spot with the Duomo lit up as as backdrop. I’m particularly looking forward to Joe Bastianich & La Terza Classe on Wednesday, August 3rd and the L’Accademia Mandolinistica Napoletana on Friday, August 12th.

Tickets are available but selling out fast for the Ravello Festival 2022. If you miss getting tickets for one of the big events, be sure to check out the series of concerts held in locations around Ravello that are free or free with entrance to the Villa Rufolo. Full program is here.

Sotto il Sole di Amalfi

The talk about town these days has been the release of the film Sotto il Sole di Amalfi (Under the Amalfi Sun) that was filmed in Amalfi. Have you seen it yet? Just watching the trailer and a few clips, it’s been fun to see so many people from Amalfi as extras. It’s available now on Netflix. I’m planning to watch it this weekend!

Ciao from Amalfi,

Laura
